  4. Dear Sir or Madam,

  5. I am applying for entry clearance as a partner, to live in the UK with my husband, Tom Hughes, who is a British citizen.

  6. We first met in person on 14 March 2023 in São Paulo, where Tom was working on a six-month project for his company. We met at a friend’s birthday dinner and spent most of his weekends together until he went home. We married on 9 August 2025 in São Paulo. Since we met, Tom has visited me five times and I have visited him in Bristol twice; when apart, we speak every day by video call.

  7. We intend to live together permanently in the UK. We will live at Flat 2, 14 Larkspur Road, Bristol, which Tom rents. It has two bedrooms, and no one else lives there.

  8. Tom has written a letter setting out how we meet the financial requirement, with the evidence enclosed.

  9. I meet the English language requirement with the IELTS Life Skills A1 test, passed on 2 December 2026. The certificate is enclosed.

  10. I have enclosed the documents listed in the attached index. Please contact me at ana.souza@example.com if you need anything further.

  11. Yours faithfully,

  12. Ana Souza28 January 2027

Writing your own

The tracker writes this letter for your own application from what you’ve told it: both names, the route, the apply-on date, the home and each kind of income, and your story in your own words. Whatever it doesn’t know is left as a [gap in square brackets] for you to fill. Edit it in the page, then download it for Word or as a PDF to sign.

It puts your words in order and never rewrites or argues them. If either of you has been refused a visa, overstayed or has a conviction, it leaves that part for a regulated adviser to write.

Questions

Do I need a covering letter for a UK spouse visa?

No rule in Appendix FM or Appendix FM-SE asks for one. A covering letter sets out the application in one place and lists what is enclosed, which makes a missing document easier to spot before sending. The tracker lists it as recommended, not required.

What goes in a spouse visa covering letter?

Which visa is applied for and the UK partner’s status, how the couple met and their time together, the home they will share, where the money is set out, how the English requirement is met, and a list of the documents enclosed. Each part answers a requirement of Appendix FM, shown beside the example.

How long should a spouse visa covering letter be?

One or two pages is usual. The documents carry the evidence; the letter says what each one is there to show.

Can the letter explain an earlier refusal or overstay?

That part needs a regulated adviser. The tracker leaves it as a part for an adviser to write rather than drafting it, because explaining someone’s own immigration history is immigration advice.

Each note checked against GOV.UK: Immigration Rules, Appendix FM-SE, GOV.UK and GOV.UK: Immigration Rules, Appendix FM on 8 November 2026. Ana and Tom are fictional. Information, not immigration advice. Whether a letter and its documents meet the rules is a judgement only a regulated adviser can make: have your bundle checked.
